The smash Broadway phenomenon “Hamilton” will hit Disney+ on July 3—more than 15 months before its planned theatrical release date of October 2021.
Created and composed by star Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show has won 11 Tony Awards as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. The upcoming film version directed by Tommy Kail was shot live in 2016 with the original Broadway cast at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York.
Miranda announced the recording’s early release in a tweet on May 12: “Our Hamilton film. This July 3rd. On Disney+.”
“We are thrilled to bring this phenomenon to Disney+ on the eve of Independence Day,” Walt Disney Company executive chairman Bob Iger said in a statement. “And we have the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team behind Hamilton to thank for allowing us to do so more than a year before planned.”
